2 - Exploring Music Video

Eminem - Not Afraid
URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5-yKhDd64s

Genre: Hip Hop
Start of video = overlooking city (Urban)

The opening shot of the music video shows Eminem (the aritist) standing on the edge of a building, overlooking the city. The fact its a city relates to the fact its an Urban song.

There are shots showing his feet close to the edge, which could relate to the fact he feels on top of the world, but so close to the edge. there is then a birds-eye view shot showing the ground below.
The look on his face shows he isn't scared (which relates to the name of the song "not afraid")

He is then shown in a dark and dingy basement, which relates to him being in a dark place in his life. This is clear even if you don't know about Eminem's background due to the dark basement and lack of lighting.

In the basement it's as if he is looking up to others and also being looked down upon by others.
On top of the city building he is now the one looking down on people and people are looking up at him.

When he sees his own reflection, his face is demonic looking and evil. This realates to the his life and the lyrics in the song, "This fucking black cloud still follow's me around
But it's time to exercise these demons".

During this part of the song, he is getting angry and frustrated in the basement and ends up throwing a chair in the wall, knocking a brick from the wall. Light shines through, representing light in his life

The version of eminem who was in the dark dingy basement is now on top of the city building at the end.

Fall Out Boy - I'm Like A Lawyer With The Way I'm Always Trying To Get You Off (Me & You)
URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FAgbZdrWiN4

Genre: Alternative, pop-punk

The band (Fall Out Boy) aren't shown much in this music video compared to the story being told. There are some clips where the band are playing in the middle of a field in Africa, and there are african children sitting in a tree within the shot. This shows us that the band are actually there, in Africa, with the children from the story.

This music video is using a story to reflect a real-life situation / problem occurring in Northern Uganda. The band are using their music as a way of showing this problem to the rest of the world and to raise awareness of what is going on, that otherwise, people would not know.

The story in this music video is about a young girl and a young boy who are in love with each other. They are forced to work long hard hours to earn money. They are saving their money together to afford for the boy to go to school. they buy his school squiptment and he goes off to school and they are happy.. but then one night, their village gets attacked by young soilders and all the boys are taken prisoner. We see the girl all alone where she used to sit with the boy.
In the end, the boy ends up escaping and returning home.

At the end of the video it tells us the real facts about this problem in Uganda. It says:
"Over the last 20 years, as many as 38,000 children have been abducted and forced to fight as child soldiers in the war in Northern Uganda. Thousands have yet to return home. Visit invisiblechildren.com to find out how you can make a difference.
