18 - Creative camera use

During Filming:
We adjusted the focus on some shots to make it blury at first, and then come into focus.

During the band footage, we slowed down the shutter speed to create a 'lag' effect.

During Editing:
We used many different transistions throughout the music video. It helps the video to flow together.

We also used many different video effects. For example, near the beginning of the video, the girl and boy meet, but it turns out to be a dream. We made this scene black and white, and added an effect to make it 'lag' to clearly show the audeience it was a dream, without having to be told it was a dream.

15 - Digipack

Analysis of two Digipack covers

I've choosen to do an analysis of Green Day Digipacks as that is that band the music video is for.

The first Digipack I am analysing is 'Bullet In A Bible' by 'Green Day'.

The second Digipack I am analysing is 'Live In Berlin' by 'Green Day'.

The front cover is simple but effective. It clearly shows the band, so people will recognize it as a Green Day DVD. It also has the bands name and the title of the DVD above the band.

In the photo of the band, they are making eye contact with the camera which will grab the attention of the target audience. Also, the Frontman is pointing towards the camera, as if he is pointing to 'You'. The clothes they are wearing will also appeal to the target audience.
The title 'LIVE 8 BERLIN' is in Red, as is the Tie on the Frontman. The rest of the front cover (including the photo) is in black and white.

The spine is kept simple, with the name of the band, 'Green Day'. Along with the title of the DVD. It also has additional detail about the DVD saying the date of live performance 'ON 2005.07.02'

The back cover is also kept quite simple. It shows the bands name and the title of the DVD again. It then lists all the different songs that are included in the DVD.
There is a photo of the Frontman of the band on the back cover. This is also in black and white, to keep with the theme of the DVD.

13 - Shooting Schedule

Most of the scenes of our video will be filmed during our practical lessons on Tuesday and Friday. We will also be filming outside of lessons, during breaks and outside of college.

First week of shooting:
The first week will be dedicated to the filming of the band
We will get those shots done first, so then we can focus on shooting the rest of the video, the story, which is going to be more complicated and challenging.

Equipment:
For the band shots we will need the following for each band member:
Lead singer / Guitarist
Microphone, Microphone stand, Cables, Guitar, Guitar picks,
Amp (Head + Cab + Cables)
Bassist
Bass Guitar, Bass picks, Amp (Head + Cab + Cables)
Drummer
Drum kit (Kick + pedal, Snare, Floor tom, Rack tom, High Hat, 2 – 4 Cymbals)
Drum Seat, Drums Sticks

Locations:
Lewes College TV Studio - where the band performance will be shot.
A back up location will be the field behind the Southover building.

Corridors in Southover building/canteen or buttery/outside Cliffe and Southover building/Lewes town - this is where the girl and her friends/new boyfriend will be filmed

Marcus' bedroom: This will be where he wakes up in his bed after the dream, looking upset because he's alone. This is also where the

12 - Health and Safety

Health and safety risks:

We had to make sure wires were out the way so no-one would trip over them

Every time we booked a camera we had to fill in a booking form.
This way the college know who has which camera and when, so if anything got broken, they know why.
We also had to book the TV Studio where the band was filmed.

When filming in a road, or by a roadside, one of us would always being keeping an eye out for cars.

When we moved from location to location, we put all the equipment back into the box, folded he tripod up and move the equipment safely to the next location.Doing this means nothing would get broken between locations.

10 - Mise-en-scene

LOCATIONS

BAND SHOTS
The shots where the band are playing won’t be set in the same places as where the story shots are taking place.
The band will be playing in a place that reflects the mood / emotion of the song.
The song is a sad / dark song, so the band will be playing in quite an empty area or dark place.

STORY SHOTS
The Opening and Final shot will be filmed in exactly the same place as each other. This will be just walking up a certain street.
The scenes of the Boy alone will be filmed in a Bedroom / House. The rooms will be dark and messy. There will be posters covering the bedroom walls. There will be used Cigarettes and empty bottles over the floor. In flashbacks of the Boy and Girl together in the Bedroom / House, the rooms will be brighter and tidy.
Some of the scenes are going to be filmed within college when the Girl meets her new boyfriend
Other scenes are going to be filmed in Lewes town or Brighton (by the pier or in town centre)

Character Costumes
The Boy
Casual clothes: jeans, leather jacket or dark-coloured T-shirt, wearing make –up (eyeliner)
The boy in the “21 Guns” video is what our boy is to be based upon.

The girl
Jeans, hoodie or top. Make-up. Maybe Sunglasses.
The girl in the “last of the American girls” video is what our girl is to be based upon.

Band Costume
The band in our music video will wear similar clothing to Green Day.
All 3 band members will be wearing black shirts and trousers, with 1 or 2 of them wearing either a White or Red tie.
Their hair will also be styled similar to Green Day. All band members will be wearing black eyeliner (as Green Day do).

We want the band to be as similar to Green Day as possible so it appeals to the target audience.

CAST
BAND
Lead singer /
Guitarist - Ben.E
Bassist - Shaun.T
Drummer - Sean Bartlett

CHARACTERS
Girl -
Stanislava
Boy - Marcus
New boyfriend - TBC

Extras - Chantalle + others

STORY
The story is about a past relationship between a Boy and a Girl.
The first scene is where the Boy and Girl meet in the street and stop and talk together (happily), but then the clip will fade and it will then show the Boy lying in bed dreaming about meeting the Girl.(This fits the lyrics of: Thought I ran into you down on the street, Then it turned out to only be a dream)
The guy then wakes up alone in a double bed looking sad.

At some point in the video their will be flashbacks of the Boy and Girl together.
There will be some scenes where they are happy, and some scenes where their relationship starts to end. The flashbacks will also shown them actually breaking up, and her meeting a new Boyfriend.
(All flashbacks will be slightly discoloured / edited to clearly show they are flashbacks)

The scenes with the Boy that are set in the ‘Present’ will show the boy alone and upset / angry the girl has left him.
One scene will show the Boy looking at old photographs of him with the girl, and then getting upset / angry and burning the photographs.
(This fits the lyrics of: I made a point to burn all of the photographs)

The final scene will be similar to the opening scene but instead, when the boy bumps into the girl, she is with her new boyfriend and they both just ignore the boy and walk straight past him. The boy will then just stand there alone (facing towards the camera), while the girl and her new boyfriend walk off in the distance behind him.

7 - Copying an existing Video

Here are the notesI took in the lessons before coping an existing video:

Learnt how to use camera and tripod.

Artificial lighting inside creates a Blue tint.
Outside sun light creates a orange tint.
so White Balance is needed

WHITE BALANCE:
• AWB - Auto setting
• Outside - (Symbol of sun)
• Inside - (Symbol of a lightbulb)
• Manual Setting - (Looks like an envelope)

MANUAL EXPOSURE:
• Shutter speed - 1/12 (Slow shutter speed. Lets in less light. Creates a blur effect when moving) - 1/2000 (Fast shutter speed. Lets in more lights. Creates a sharper image)
• Aperture / iris - F STOPS: Brightness of image.
• Gain - ...

Shooting script:
Information about Shot Number, Shot Type, Description of Action, Cam Movement / Direction. Also to write down details about each Take of the shot.
For example:
• Take 1: Not so good. Head out of frame.
• Take 2: Good shot. In frame.

Clapperboard:
Has information about Shot Number and Take Number. Is held in-front of the camera before each Shot / Take. Some clap together, which is used to help Sync the sound with the video in the editing stages.

4 - Permission

(Click picture to view Full-Size)

The Email says:

Dear Sir/Madame

I am an A2 Media student at Sussex Downs college. We are doing a project on the music industry in which we have to make a music video for an existing band.
I am writing to you for permission to use the song - 'Whatshername' by 'Green Day' for our music video.

Many thanks
Marcus Lurring

3 - Song Choice

The song that we have chosen is "Whatsername" by Green day. It was a choice between "Whatsername" and "extraordinary girl". We have chosen this song because we like the song that we think that we could make a video that conveys the meassage of the song

Song Artist: Green Day
Song Title: Whatshername

Lyrics:
Thought I ran into you down on the street,
Then it turned out to only be a dream,
I made a point to burn all of the photographs,
She went away and then I took a different path,
I remember the face, but I can't recall the name,
Now I wonder how whatshername has been...

Seems that she disappeared without a trace,
Did she ever marry ole whatshisface,
I made a point to burn all of the photographs,
She went away and then I took a different path,
I remember the face, but I can't recall the name,
Now I wonder how whatshername has been...

Remember, whatever,
It seems like forever ago!
Remember, whatever,
It seems like forever ago!
The regrets are useless,
In my mind,
She's in my head,
I must confess!
The regrets are useless,
In my mind,
She's in my head,
From so long ago!
(Go... go... go... go...)
(Go... go... go... go... go...)

And in the darkest night,
If my memory serves me right,
I'll never turn back time!
Forgetting you, but not the time!

2 - Exploring Music Video

Eminem - Not Afraid
URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5-yKhDd64s

Genre: Hip Hop
Start of video = overlooking city (Urban)

The opening shot of the music video shows Eminem (the aritist) standing on the edge of a building, overlooking the city. The fact its a city relates to the fact its an Urban song.

There are shots showing his feet close to the edge, which could relate to the fact he feels on top of the world, but so close to the edge. there is then a birds-eye view shot showing the ground below.
The look on his face shows he isn't scared (which relates to the name of the song "not afraid")

He is then shown in a dark and dingy basement, which relates to him being in a dark place in his life. This is clear even if you don't know about Eminem's background due to the dark basement and lack of lighting.

In the basement it's as if he is looking up to others and also being looked down upon by others.
On top of the city building he is now the one looking down on people and people are looking up at him.

When he sees his own reflection, his face is demonic looking and evil. This realates to the his life and the lyrics in the song, "This fucking black cloud still follow's me around
But it's time to exercise these demons".

During this part of the song, he is getting angry and frustrated in the basement and ends up throwing a chair in the wall, knocking a brick from the wall. Light shines through, representing light in his life

The version of eminem who was in the dark dingy basement is now on top of the city building at the end.

Fall Out Boy - I'm Like A Lawyer With The Way I'm Always Trying To Get You Off (Me & You)
URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FAgbZdrWiN4

Genre: Alternative, pop-punk

The band (Fall Out Boy) aren't shown much in this music video compared to the story being told. There are some clips where the band are playing in the middle of a field in Africa, and there are african children sitting in a tree within the shot. This shows us that the band are actually there, in Africa, with the children from the story.

This music video is using a story to reflect a real-life situation / problem occurring in Northern Uganda. The band are using their music as a way of showing this problem to the rest of the world and to raise awareness of what is going on, that otherwise, people would not know.

The story in this music video is about a young girl and a young boy who are in love with each other. They are forced to work long hard hours to earn money. They are saving their money together to afford for the boy to go to school. they buy his school squiptment and he goes off to school and they are happy.. but then one night, their village gets attacked by young soilders and all the boys are taken prisoner. We see the girl all alone where she used to sit with the boy.
In the end, the boy ends up escaping and returning home.

At the end of the video it tells us the real facts about this problem in Uganda. It says:
"Over the last 20 years, as many as 38,000 children have been abducted and forced to fight as child soldiers in the war in Northern Uganda. Thousands have yet to return home. Visit invisiblechildren.com to find out how you can make a difference.
